Adobe Illustrator Fundamentals: Drawing With Vectors - Illustrator Pen Tool Tutorial
May 28, 2010

Adobe CS4 Web Workflows: Building Websites with Adobe Creative Suite 4This free Illustrator tutorial — Adobe Illustrator Fundamentals: Drawing with Vectors — is adapted from Adobe CS4 Web Workflows: Building Websites with Adobe Creative Suite 4 By Joseph W. Lowery

If you had to choose one tool that defined Adobe Illustrator, it would undoubtedly be the Pen tool. Illustrator is known primarily for its ability to produce high-quality illustrations, reproducible at any resolution. The vector paths created by the Pen tool are completely flexible and, because they are vectors rather than pixels, never degrade no matter the resolution. Unfortunately, the Pen tool is one of the hardest to master; however, with a bit of practice, you’ll find yourself beginning to draw the most sophisticated of shapes.

One technique for learning how to use the Pen tool stems from a common early childhood practice: tracing. Chances are you’re like me and millions of other children who spent hours outlining their favorite animal, flower, or character with a carefully selected crayon—perhaps, like me, with your tongue stuck out of the side of your mouth in deep concentration. In the upcoming exercise, you’ll have an opportunity to relive those days, but with the Illustrator Pen tool instead of a crayon: Whether your tongue sneaks out or not is up to you.

1- Open Adobe Illustrator and, from the Workspace Switcher, make sure Essentials is chosen. Almost all the available workspaces keep the tools you’ll need in this exercise front and center, but the Essentials option is the default.

2 - Download the bird.jpg file and open it.

Adobe Illustrator Fundamentals: Drawing With Vectors - Illustrator Pen Tool Tutorial

Note: While it is true that Illustrator has a very robust tracing feature called Live Trace, using it won’t give you the practice you’ll need to master the Pen tool. However, if you’d like to experiment with this feature, select the JPEG image and, from the Options bar, click Live Trace. There are a good number of presets from which to choose on the left side of the Live Trace Options bar that can give you a sense of what’s possible. READ FULL TUTORIAL...

Free Workspace Import/Export Script For Photoshop
May 28, 2010

Find upgrade options and Creative Suite 5 deals at the Adobe USA StoreFrom John Nack's Blog: "I sometimes hear requests for an easier way to migrate one's settings from one version of Photoshop to another, or to share settings among users. To that end, Photoshop engineer Tai Luxon has whipped up a little script you may find handy:

I wrote a script to enable simple importing and exporting of Photoshop workspaces. This is a side project with limited testing, so the usual disclaimers apply. It should work in both CS4 and CS5 (although it is a little more robust in CS5), so you can use it to migrate workspaces from CS4 to CS5 in addition to using it to enable easier sharing of CS5 workspaces between machines/people. Please let me know of any snags that you run into and if this is useful.

To run the script, choose "File->Scripts->Browse..." from with Photoshop, then browse to the script's location on disk. Download the free workspace import/export script here.

Photoshop CS4 11.0.2 Update - Multiple Languages
May 28, 2010

Find upgrade options and Creative Suite 5 deals at the Adobe USA StoreThe Adobe Photoshop CS4 11.0.2 update for Windows and the Adobe Photoshop CS4 11.0.2 update for MAC addresses a number of critical issues and vulnerabilities discovered after Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended (11.0 and 11.0.1) software were released.

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 and earlier for Windows and Macintosh that could allow an attacker who successfully exploits these vulnerabilities to take control of the affected system. A malicious .ASL, .ABR, or .GRD file must be opened in Photoshop CS4 by the user for an attacker to be able to exploit these vulnerabilities. Adobe recommends Photoshop CS4 customers update to Photoshop CS4 11.0.2, which resolves these issues.

The Photoshop 11.0.2 update also addresses a number of problems with brushes, styles and gradient preset files discovered after Photoshop CS4 was released. Note: None of these issues affect Photoshop CS5.

Topaz Adjust Tip from Rick Sammon - Try Topaz Adjust Twice
May 26, 2010

From Rick Sammon's blog: When you are working and playing with Topaz Adjust, try this: apply the Spicify effect to the foreground, and the Simplify effect to the sky. The result: detail in the foreground and a soft and pleasing sky. Topaz Adjust turned my dull photo of the "Bird's Nest" in Beijing into a sci-fi type photo that pops with color and detail.

Red Giant Software Releases First iPhone App: Plastic Bullet - New Camera App with Infinite, Beautiful Possibilities
May 25, 2010

Red Giant Software released its first iPhone app called Plastic Bullet, created by filmmaker and photographer Stu Maschwitz. Adding to Red Giant's growing line of photography tools, Plastic Bullet puts the fun, spontaneity, and surprise of plastic-fantastic toy cameras right into your pocket. Just tap to turn your photos into gloriously unpredictable works of art—then tap again to change the look.

"We all take photos with our cell phone cameras, usually with the intention of communicating something emotional to our friends or families. Not just 'we went to the park today,' but what it felt like to be at the park. But as cell phone cameras increase in quality, the images get more clinical, less emotional. They're too perfect. Plastic Bullet is all about bringing emotion and spontaneity back to mobile photography. The creativity comes in how you respond to the infinite variety of results possible with the app," said Stu Maschwitz, Creative Director at Red Giant Software, whose film credits include Sin City.

Red Giant Software Releases First iPhone App: Plastic Bullet - New Camera App with Infinite, Beautiful Possibilities

Start with the built-in camera or a shot from your Photo Library. Plastic Bullet develops your photo into four totally random variations. Like one? Tap it to see it larger. Love it? Tap the heart to save. Or keep tapping the Refresh button to see infinite variations. If you like one, save it! You'll never see it again.

Just like a real plastic camera, photos from Plastic Bullet can be amazing in ways you never expected. There's also an option to save your original shots, so you can develop more random versions later. Watch a video introduction of Plastic Bullet.

Auto FX Photoshop Plugins Review - Mystical Suite - Mystical Focus, Mystical Lighting, Mystical Tint

AutoFX’s Mystical Suite is a collection of three applications/plugins that share a common interface and allow interoperability between Mystical Focus, Mystical Lighting and Ambiance 2.0 and Mystical Tint Tone and Color 2.0. The applications can run standalone or within Photoshop as a plugin. As a photographer well versed with Photoshop, I opted to explore the plugin instance first. The plugin is invoked from the filter’s menu in Photoshop and can be applied to any non-empty layer.

Using Dreamweaver CS5 with Web Content Management Systems - Adapted From Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 Bible
May 18, 2010

The following Dreamweaver CS5 tutorial, Using Dreamweaver CS5 with Web Content Management Systems, is adapted from Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 Bible, by Joseph W. Lowery.

The open source nature of the majority of Web CMS applications has greatly enhanced their popularity and usefulness. Not only do the top Web CMS apps—WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal—all enjoy their own vast supportive community, a full spectrum of designs and extensions has emerged as a result. Cross-pollination from one platform to another is quite common; a plugin developed for WordPress frequently inspires a Joomla extension and a Drupal module—and vice versa. READ FULL TUTORIAL...

Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers Book - Free Sample Video Clip On Masking Hair With Refine Edge Tool
May 12, 2010

Martin Evening’s Adobe Photoshop for Photographers titles have become classic reference sources for photographers at all skill levels. Whether you are an accomplished user or just starting out, the Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers book contains a wealth of practical advice, hints and tips to help you achieve professional-looking results. This latest edition is a thorough update of the previous CS4 book and provides detailed information on all the new features in Photoshop CS5 that will be of interest to photographers.

Here's a short extract, plus a video tutorial on how to use Refine Edge to mask hair in Photoshop: Photoshop CS5 now offers the ability to successfully make cut-out masks of complex subjects against busy backgrounds. This isn’t something new as there are a number of third-party plug-ins that have been able to do this type of masking, but this is the first time Photoshop has provided an effective, built-in solution. OK, there was the Extract command (which no longer ships with Photoshop), but this method, using the new improved Refine Edge command works much better. Click here to view the movie. Most are in a straight line, some are a few lines put together – and there’s also a circle, triangle, square, heart, and a frame shape. These I actually got the idea for by noticing the trail of circles on the wall, where the light was shining through the small holes in my the blinds on my window. They are all extremely high resolution, with an average size of about 2000 pixels. I actually got the idea for these by noticing the trail of small circles on my wall, where the light was shining through the holes in my window blinds. Thought it was pretty, made a set of brushes.
