AKVIS SmartMask - Photoshop Plugin Masking Tool
January 31, 2008
AKVIS LLC has announced the first release of AKVIS SmartMask plug-in v.1.1. for Windows. AKVIS SmartMask is an efficient masking tool that saves you time on complex selections and is fun to use. Never before has selection been so simple! Try the program for 10 days for free. The Windows version is available today, with the Macintosh version coming soon.
AKVIS SmartMask is an efficient selection tool that saves you time and is fun to use. AKVIS SmartMask makes even a difficult selection as easy as pie. Now, you can spend less of your time on isolating objects and more of it on creativity.
The idea is so simple that you will feel like a child in drawing classes: there are two pencils (red and blue); you draw a line with the blue pencil inside the object you want to select (for example, yourself on a group photo), and with the red pencil - some lines outside the object, to define the areas that should be cut out (other guys in the photo).
The program miraculously reads your thoughts and makes the selection you want - understanding where the borders of the object end.
There are three modes tailored to different selection types: Sharp, Soft and Complex. For example, in the Soft mode a green pencil is added, that helps you to define difficult parts - fluff, hair, fur. In cases where the selected object stands against a background of a similar color range, or the object's edges are uneven, you can use the touch-up brush in the Complex mode.
AKVIS SmartMask even allows you to get rid of the color tint left on the cutout object by the environment. In most cases objects on a photo are not evenly lighted, the cutout object can have shades and colors reflected from the nearby objects. Such color shades can be absolutely inappropriate on a new background: for example, hair having a blue cast from the sky or a green shade from the trees. This mask tool helps to get rid of the unwanted color shades.
Business Use: Making selections takes up much time of the designer's working day. Use of SmartMask increases his/her productivity up to 20 times. Your designer will be released from the boring work and will have more room for creativity and realization of his ideas.
AKVIS SmartMask plugin integrates into the image processing programs installed on your computer. The plug-in is compatible with Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Corel (Jasc) Paint Shop Pro, etc. AKVIS SmartMask runs on Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/NT/2003/Vista. For a free trial, AKVIS offers 10 days of fully functional use.
AKVIS SmartMask sells for $120 USD . Business License sells for $240 USD. Home users can enjoy the full line of AKVIS plugins in the AKVIS Alchemy bundle (Enhancer, Chameleon, Stamp, Retoucher, Coloriage, Noise Buster, SmartMask, DecoratorSketch, LightShop and Frame Suite) for USD $325 USD, a savings of $387 over purchasing each separately. One license key allows activating the software on two computers, for example, on a desktop and a laptop.

Spanish Moss Photoshop Brushes From Stephanie
January 31, 2008
Here's Stephanie with her latest free Photoshop brush set, Spanish Moss:
Spanish moss is that beautiful moss that you see hanging from various trees in the tropics, swamps, etc.
All of these brushes come from photographs taken personally, down in Sarasota, Florida (where I grew up). They’re all fairly high resolution, with the average brush size being around 1500-1800 pixels.
They come in clumps, in long hanging tendrils, in looping dangles, etc. They don’t just “cut off” on the edges, either so you could use them in places where the top doesn’t need to be hidden or against the edge of the canvas, etc.
Download Spanish Moss high res Photoshop brushes.
No brush tips this week, because I’m out of town (yet again!) and trying to get a bunch of stuff done before I fly up to NYC for the weekend. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Want More Free Photoshop Brushes?
We've collected the most recent of Stephanie's original brushes on a special Obsidian Dawn Photoshop Brushes Page, with big preview images to give you an idea of each set. For her high resolution brushes, you can find a special collection on our high res brush page. Also see our Free Photoshop brushes Page for other places to find brushes.

How To: Get Mondrianum Working in Photoshop
If you haven’t heard of Mondrianum yet, it’s a neat little (shareware) plugin for Photoshop (Mac only) that adds Adobe’s Kuler color combinations to the Apple color picker. It doesn’t just work in Photoshop. After installing Mondrainum, it works system-wide with any Mac app that uses the Apple color picker, like iLife, iWork, etc. Granted, most Photoshoppers probably don’t prefer the Apple color picker over Adobe’s, but if you are ever in need of a little color inspiration with the help from Kuler, it can come in handy. I’ll show you how to get it working in Photoshop.

Creating A Fantastic Fantasy Night Sky In Photoshop

So, in this tutorial I will show you how to create cartoon style clouds using Photoshop and a bit of Illustrator.

Creating a Photoshop Action
Are you in the mood for some Action? I’m talking Photoshop Actions :) They are the perfect solution to handle tasks with one click. An Action is a recording of several Photoshop operations and commands. Once the Action is created, one click is all it takes and the task will be excecuted. It’s very powerful, can save you heaps of time and it’s actually not that hard to create. Oh and before someone asks, this tutorial is written for version CS3. Certain things might be different in previous Photoshop versions.

Softening Nighttime Shots With Gaussian Blur
Sometimes the harshness of night illumination shows too many facial blemishes. Since you have the power, why not remove them? Cloning them out can work for individual marks, but for overall appearance, creating a soft mask for the face provides the subject with a pleasant appearance. This technique requires a duplication layer of the image, a Gaussian blur, and some careful cutouts. The intensity of the effect can be controlled via the layer Opacity setting.
Photoshop World Conference & Expo Set for April in Orlando

The conference will also feature a three-day Tech Expo, portfolio reviews by Photoshop World instructors, a live filming of PhotoshopUser TV, 12 pre-conference sessions, and bonus workshops by Kelby Training, Adobe and Microsoft.

Episode 66: Crossing the Process
Cross Processing has been a popular photographic technique for many years and with the innovation of digital tools the look of cross processed photos has become even more popular. There are many plug-ins and tools out there that will help you achieve an effect such as this, but all of those tools require more time and money than I am willing to spend.
Luckily when I was poking around in the curves dialogue box I actually found a preset that does a very nice job of "cross processing" a photograph. Add this as an adjustment layer and you've got yourself a kick-butt technique, and most importantly a non-destructive effect!

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly
There often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.
Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.
Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.
Generate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.
Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
