"Run, Don't Walk" To Download Camera Raw 4.1 - Jeff Schewe Shows You Why
May 31 2007

Adobe Photoshop Blog | PhotoshopSupport.comJeff Schewe has written one of his all-encompassing posts, this time taking you through an extensive tour of what's new in Camera Raw 4.1. The article, About Camera Raw 4.1, includes 42 screenshots, all of which are clickable and launch full screen versions where every detail is crystal clear.

Jeff is a very connected Photoshop guy and was involved in the development of this Camera Raw upgrade, and the sharing of his knowledge and enthusiasm of digital photography and Photoshop are a real gift to our community. So with enormous gratitude for his many great posts and contributions I say "run, don't walk!" to look through About Camera Raw 4.1, and spend some time learning from a real Photoshop pro. From the intro:

Adobe has released Camera Raw 4.1, and rather than a small update just for new cameras, this one is major. New features and new functionality are showing up in a long awaited upgrade of Camera Raw’s sharpening controls, a new control called Clarity, enhanced noise reduction and two new defringing controls in lens correction. All told, there is a surprising amount of “new” in Camera Raw 4.1.

[Editor’s note: it should be noted that Jeff Schewe was personally involved in the development of Camera Raw 4.1. This article is not an independent review of Camera Raw 4.1 but an explanation of the new tools. Jeff explains at the end of the article how he came to be personally involved.]

And from the Summary:

I honestly think that with the Camera Raw 4.1 update, it can be argued that Camera Raw 4.1 has now jumped to the top of the heap for raw processing software. The combination of radically improved sharpening, improved demosaicing and noise reduction, the new Defringe functionality and Clarity has made raw processing through Camera Raw 4.1 incredibly powerful and with the potential for the highest image quality.

Camera Raw version 4.1 will only work with CS3, so that's that if you haven't upgraded yet. Download Camera Raw 4.1 at the Adobe site. To review your upgrade options visit the Adobe Store.

Camera Raw 4.1 And New DNG Converter Released By Adobe
May 31 2007

Adobe Photoshop Blog | PhotoshopSupport.comAdobe has released Camera Raw 4.1. The Camera Raw 4.1 update includes improved noise reduction and sharpening tools and raw file support for 13 additional camera models and camera backs. This update also builds on the raw file support integrated in the Photoshop family of products.

The camera raw functionality in the Adobe Photoshop software provides fast and easy access within the Photoshop line of products to the raw image formats produced by many leading professional and midrange digital cameras. Working with these digital negatives allows greater artistic control and flexibility while still maintaining the original raw files. Camera Raw 4.1 plug-in also supports the same functionality for TIFF and JPEG files. Now professional photographers can quickly and easily import and manipulate raw data, producing the highest quality results while saving time.

The new Camera Raw 4.1plug-in supports 14 digital cameras including the Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Fuji FinePix S5 Pro, Nikon D40x, Olympus E-410, Olympus SP-550 UZ, Sigma SD14, Phase One H 20, Phase One H 25, Phase One P 20, Phase One P 21, Phase One P 25, Phase One P 30 and Phase One P 45. Additionally, Camera Raw 4.1 will add support for popular camera backs from Phase One, including the H20, H25, P20, P21, P25, P30 and P45 models. The free Adobe DNG Converter, that is part of this update, translates all Photoshop-supported raw photo formats into the universal .DNG file format giving photographers a single unified file format for archiving raw files.

Photoshop Lightroom, leveraging Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw technology, will add support for the above camera and camera back models in an update in the near future. Updates to Version Cue and Bridge will coincide with this Camera Raw plug-in update and will be available for free download on www.adobe.com. Some of the new features of Camera Raw 4.1 are listed below (taken from the accompanying Read Me file):

Clarity
New Control available in the Basic panel. Clarity adds depth to an image by increasing local contrast. When using this setting, it is best to zoom in to 100% or greater. To maximize the effect, increase the setting until you see halos near the edge details of the image, and then reduce the setting slightly.

Sharpening Improvements:
Additional controls available in the Detail panel. The zoom level must be set to 100% or greater in order to view the effects of these controls.

Amount
Adjusts edge definition. Increase the Amount value to increase sharpening. A value of zero turns off sharpening. In general, set Amount to a lower value for cleaner images. The adjustment locates pixels that differ from surrounding pixels based on the threshold you specify and increases the pixels’ contrast by the amount you specify. Press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) while dragging this slider to view the sharpening on a grayscale preview.

Radius
Adjusts the size of the details that sharpening is applied to. Photos with very fine details may need a lower radius setting. Photos with larger details may be able to use a larger radius. Using too large a radius will generally result in unnatural looking results. Press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) while dragging this slider to preview the radius effect on edge definition.

Detail
Adjusts how much high-frequency information is sharpened in the image and how much the sharpening process emphasizes edges. Lower settings primarily sharpen edges to remove blurring. Higher values are useful for making the textures in the image more pronounced.

Masking
Controls an edge mask. With a setting of zero, everything in the image receives the same amount of sharpening. With a setting of 100, sharpening is mostly restricted to those areas near the strongest edges. Press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) while dragging this slider to see the areas to be sharpened (white) versus the areas masked out (black).

Additional Notes:

  • Camera Raw 4.1 does not support the Canon EOS-1D Mark III SRAW format at this time
  • Lightroom and Camera Raw will be updated together to ensure raw format and settings compatibility. For each update there can be a brief period of time when one product is released before the other. Please note that Camera Raw 4.1 has been released in advance of Lightroom’s next update that will be available shortly.
  • It is a known issue that sharpening on PowerPC is slow. We plan to make it faster in a future version.
  • Two additional camera raw preferences have been provided in this release:
  • Always open JPEG files with settings using Camera Raw
  • Always open TIFF files with settings using Camera Raw
  • JPEG or TIFF files with adjustment settings embedded by Camera Raw or Lightroom will always open through Camera Raw with the preference enabled.

Download Camera Raw 4.1 at the Adobe site. Find all your Photoshop upgrade options at the Adobe Store.

Photoshop Tips, Tricks & Tutorials - Jennifer Apple - I Cover The Waterfront - Special Batgirl EditionPhotographing Water Drops
Why am I so interested in photographing water drops? What are the special challenges and techniques associated with photographing water drops? Do different water drops have different characteristics (in other words, is there a taxonomy of water drops from a photographer’s perspective)?

Leaving the technicalities of water drop photography aside for a second, water drops interest me because they are, as poet William Blake put it, a world in a grain of sand. Each water drop seems like a complete world, or universe, to me with its unique colors, reflections, and refractions. These worlds are ethereal and ephemeral, meaning they are fragile, ghostly, almost like magical parallel universes.

New and Improved Curves in Photoshop CS3
The Curves tool has been such a big part of Photoshop's editing process for so long that no one really expected it to change with Photoshop CS3. But Adobe has proven that change can be good. While it's still a powerful tool for enhancing your photos, the Curves tool is now much easier to use.

Better Black and Whites in CS3
One of the things that you’ll find makes Photoshop CS3's new Black and White adjustment even better is that it can be used as an adjustment layer. That means the effects are never permanent and you can always revert back to the original if you don't like what you did. It really takes the new adjustment a step above the rest of the choices we used to have in Photoshop.

Photoshop Tutorial - Working With CD & DVD Label Templates
May 28, 2007

CD & DVD Labels - Photoshop CD Label Templates & Label Printing TipsReady to create a stunningly beautiful CD label that you can print at home on your inkjet, but are feeling a little confused by PDF templates and printer settings? Well we've got relief in the form of a wonderful Photoshop tutorial by Pariah S. Burke — Photoshop CD Label Templates & Label Printing Tips — that walks you through all the steps needed to get that vision out into the world. From the intro:

"Do you want all your labels bland, text-on-white that, at most, have a clichéd clipart icon or jagged-edge version of your logo shoved into the corner? Or, would you prefer unfettered labeling that fully communicates and reinforces your brand by using your exact corporate colors, signature typeface, creative imagery, and a sharp, high-resolution version of your logo?

"In the old days (the 90s) of desktop labeling, a would-be label creator had two options: Microsoft Word or proprietary labeling software produced by the makers of ready-to-print label paper. Nowadays, however, choices are much more open.

"On the rise are label templates based on Adobe’s agile and ubiquitous Portable Document Format (PDF). Any creative application in the professional or “prosumer” (effectively, serious hobbyist) class can either or both read and create PDF files. More importantly, PDF files can be viewed and printed by anyone with a copy of the Adobe Reader — which is to say, by just about every computer user on planet Earth. PDF-based labels can be printed on any inkjet or laser printer, or even sent to a printing shop."

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

Media Lab Release SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.

SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProGenerate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.

Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
