Photoshop Tip — Centering Dragged Layers The Easy Way
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipWhen dragging a layer from one document to another, the object will appear in the new document at the point your cursor was when you released the mouse button. If you'd prefer that the layer appear perfectly centered within the other document, just hold the shift key as you drag, and when you release the mouse button, the object will be perfectly centered.

Photoshop Tip — Speed Up Photoshop By Merging Layers
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipEvery time you add a layer to Photoshop, it adds quite a bit of file size to your image. The larger your file size, the slower Photoshop goes. If you're creating a document that has lots of layers, before long, your file size is going to get pretty huge. One way to keep things lean and mean is to merge any layers that don't need to be separate. You do this by clicking the topmost layer in the layers palette, and then pressing Command-E (PC: Control-E). This merges the current layer with the layer directly beneath it. Think of it this way - every time you merge two layers, your file size drops and Photoshop gets faster. It's like a keyboard shortcut that adds more horsepower.

Attention All Space Monkey People: Think Secret Says "New Adobe Creative Suite in Q1 2005"
[September 22, 2004]
Mac website Think Secret reports that Adobe plans to deliver the next version of Adobe Creative Suite in early 2005. Here's a quote from the article by Ryan Katz, Senior Editor:

"Adobe plans to roll-out the second version of its Creative Suite bundle in early 2005, documents obtained by Think Secret reveal. According to sources, Creative Suite 2.0, code-named Cookie Dough, will adhere to Adobe's 12-18 month refresh schedule for its flagship application suite.
"Creative Suite 2.0 will include a new version of Illustrator (presumably 12.0, but possibly 11.5 ) code-named Zodiac, a new version of Photoshop (again, likely 9.0, but possibly 8.5) code-named Space Monkey, a new version of InDesign (either 4.0 or 3.5) code-named FireDrake, and GoLive 8.0, code-named Reloaded. It's unclear at this point whether Adobe plans to tie Acrobat 7.0, code-named Vegas, into the CS suite or will keep it largely as a stand-alone product included with CS Premium. Sources indicate that Acrobat 7.0 is separately slated for release by year's end."

Photoshop Tip — Color-Coding Made Easy
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIn Photoshop you can color-code layers and layer sets for quick visual identification. One way to do this is to bring up the Layer properties dialog (from the layers palette's pop-up menu) and choose your colors from a pop-up menu. But there's a much faster way - at least if you know this shortcut: Control click (PC:Right-Click) on the eye icon next to the layer you want to color code, and a pop-up menu of colors will appear where you can choose the shade you like. (For this to work, you must have more than 1 layer in the document.)

Speaking Of Money, Real Or Otherwise...
Deke McClelland addresses the banknote restriction controversy in tip 14 of his great Random Collection of Photoshop CS Tips:

Adobe Photoshop Blog - Money"As you may have heard, Photoshop CS now includes technology that prevents it from opening certain kinds of banknotes. Rumor has it, the technology responds to patterns in the new $20 bill (including the yellow 0's) that also appear in Euros and other protected currency. I'm enough of a civil libertarian to find this intrusive. Designers have long been — and continue to be — permitted to reproduce money for non-fraudulent purposes at certain sizes. Meanwhile, Photoshop won't even open the treatment shown here, even though I did it in Photoshop! So naturally, there must be a workaround: Open the money in ImageReady, then click the Edit in Photoshop button at the bottom of the ImageReady toolbox. ImageReady puts the artwork on an independent layer, which prevents Photoshop from complaining. I imagine Adobe will kill this back door solution in a future release, but so long as you save the layered document as a PSD file, you're safe for now."

Photoshop Tip — Two Files Are Better Than One
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipThere are times when we should be working (or experimenting) on a copy of an image - it's a shame to trash a good image then try to recreate it. You could always do a Save As and choose As a Copy, but here's a better way: Go to the bottom of the History palette and click on the Create New Snapshot icon (the one that looks like a camera). Click on the new snapshot near the top of the History palette to make it the active History state. Finally, go to the bottom of the History palette and click on the Create New Document from Current State icon. There you go, a copy of the image, just dying for you to trash it.

Photoshop Tip — Zoom Out For Sharper Web Images
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipThis is a tip we use almost daily when we have to greatly reduce the size and/or resolution of an image. Sometimes when you make drastic size/ resolution change, it can really make the resulting image blurry, so what we do is simply zoom out on the image so that the window and image are at either 50% or 25% view. Then, we take a screen capture of our image window at the new smaller size. That way, the image still looks sharp, but it's much smaller when we open the screen capture in Photoshop. The trick to making this work is using either a 50%, 25%, or 12.5% view size for making the capture. If you view the image at 66.7%, 33.3%, 16.7%, the image won't be as crisp (because of the way Photoshop draws the image at those views).

The Face Of Tomorrow - Today
[September 15, 2004]
Adobe Photoshop Blog - The Face Of TomorrowThe Face of Tomorrow is a new series of works by Istanbul based photographer Mike Mike. It deals with notions of race, place, identity and belonging on both a local level as well as on a global scale.
The Face of Tomorrow attempts to find a city's identity by presenting just two faces (one male, one female), that are based on composites of local pictures of inhabitants.
I asked Mike Mike if Photoshop was part of the process. "The whole process involves two programs - Photoshop and Fantamorph," he said. "The initial photo retouching and positioning is done in Photoshop, as is color correction and sharpness. The actual morphing is done in a program called Fantamorph. Does Photoshop have a morphing plugin? The morphed image is then sent back to Photoshop for final color correction and composition."
The Face of Tomorrow is an open source project. Anyone can send in 100 photos and Mike will composite the face of that city or place.
Want to know what your child might look like? Send in a photo of you and another person and for just $15 Face of Tomorrow will email you the results.
Also look at The Face of Tomorrow (Book 1) — a 150 page book with individual and composite faces from the first 12 cities done to date. You can flip through the pages.

Photoshop Tip — Copy a Layer In The Same Location in Another Document

Photoshop Tip — The Gaussian Blur Keyboard Shortcut
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipI thought that would get your attention. That's because you know there's no keyboard shortcut for applying a Gaussian Blur. But there is in my copy of Photoshop CS. How is that possible? Because I created one, and you can too. Just go under the Edit menu and choose Keyboard Shortcuts to bring up the Keyboard Shortcuts editor. Then, from the Shortcuts For pop-up menu, choose Application Menus. In the list of menus in the window beneath it, click on the gray, right-facing triangle next to Filter to reveal all the choices under the Filter menu. Scroll down to Gaussian Blur, then click on the name. This brings up a field where you can enter the shortcut by pressing the keys you want to use. I recommend using the Shift-Option-Command-G (PC: Shift-Alt-Control-G) because there are so few shortcuts not already being used by Photoshop. Click OK, and not only is the shortcut activated but your custom shortcut now appears in the Filter menu to the right of Gaussian Blur.

Photoshop Tip — Moving Multiple Layers From Document To Document
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipWant to move more than one layer at a time from one document to another? It's easy as long as you know where to drag from. First, link your layers together, then make sure that you drag your layer from within the document itself, rather than trying to drag the layer from the layers palette. Dragging a layer from the layers palette to another document is fine, as long as you only want to drag one layer at a time.

Photoshop Tip — Finding the Photographic Brush Tips
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipAdobe hid 'em, but they're there - a few photographic brush tips, and it's worth giving them a try just to see what they can do. To find these photographic brush tips, go to the brushes palette, and from the palettes pop-down menu, load the set named Special Effect Brushes. Try the Large Roses brush (just click it a couple of times in your image), or the Ducks brush. Then click-and-drag the first brush (the flowers) and watch what happens. Try the third brush in the list, and paint a few strokes. Pretty neat stuff.

Photoshop Tip — Transforming and Copying at the Same Time
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipGenerally, when you apply a transformation to an object (scaling, rotating, distorting, perspective), you apply that transformation to the object itself. However, here's a cool tip if you want to apply a transformation (using Free Transform) on a duplicate of your object, rather than on the original: Press Option-Command-T (PC: Alt-Control-T), then use the Free Transform tool as you usually would. You'll notice that as you begin to transform, the original object remains untouched, and copy is transformed instead.

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

Media Lab Release SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.

SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProGenerate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.

Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
