Photoshop Tip Reaching the Free Transform Handles
![]()
If you want to use free transform on a layer, but the image extends beyond the edges of your document window (and this happens frequently if your collaging different photos together), you won't be able to reach the free transform handles to scale your image down to size. Here's the hidden keyboard shortcut that lets you reach each and every handle, no matter how far the image extends outside your current canvas area. Just press Command-T (PC: Control-T) to bring up free transform, then press Command-0 (PC: Control-0), and your window will zoom exactly the right size to enable you to reach all the handles. Cool!

Canon's New 8.2-Megapixel EOS 20D Digital SLR has left the lab. Read the EOS 20D Photoshop Tip Instant Opacity Change
![]()
Any time you want to change the opacity of the layer you're currently working on, just switch to the move tool and press a number key on your keyboard: 4=40% opacity, 5=50% opacity, etc. If you want an exact percentage, such as 52%, then type in 52 (note: you have to type quickly, or you'll get 50% then 20%).

Inspiration...
"The Logomotive" by James Porto is from the August 9, 2004 issue of New York Magazine. It was used for a story about how the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority was exploring selling the names of subway stations and lines to corporate sponsors. And so, the magazine asked, could this be the subway of the future?
After reading through and looking at the art, I started to flip the page, then I went back. I stared at the piece and realized how detailed and how perfect it was. Was it a Photoshop piece? I searched for and contacted the artist, James Porto. He told me it was a Photoshop piece. I asked him if I could put it on the site, and he agreed. And so I have started a new section - INSPIRATION - that will highlight a great individual piece of work. James is the first. Please have a look at this amazing piece of Photoshop art.
Field Of Cameras
Seems there might be more cameras than athletes this time around. Look at these photos of cameras at the Olympics.

Drug Store Chain To Market Disposable Digital Camera
Pharmacy chain CVS Corp. said it would offer the world's first disposable digital camera with a bright color viewing screen that allows consumers to instantly preview pictures. The new camera, priced at $19.99, marks an evolution from other one-time use digital cameras sold in U.S. for the past year, which had no ability to instantly review photos.
Photoshop Tip Applying Layer Styles To Your Background Layer
![]()
How do you apply a layer style to your background layer? You can't. That is, unless you double click on your background layer. This brings up the new layer dialog where you can rename your background layer, and when you do, it turns into a regular layer. Now you can apply layer styles to your hearts content. Want an even faster way? Just hold the option key (PC: Alt key) and double-click. Then you won't get the dialog at all- it will just convert it into a new layer named layer 0.

TURNING PHOTOS FROM COLOR TO STUNNING BLACK AND WHITE
Once again, a nice Photoshop tip from the CreativeBits website: "You want to make a grayscale image from a color one, but the black and white image becomes flat and boring? There is a good reason for it. Different colors with the same brightness look similar when converted to grayscale. In cases when you have an image with blue sky and yellow sand, or orange flowers surrounded with green leafs, you need to use the Channel Mixer..."

IN PRAISE OF GOOD PLASTIC SURGERY
I was looking at a site that displays images of Good Plastic Surgery when it struck me how many times I've performed the same tweaking operations on photographs of peoples' faces. Usually the client is there with stern instructions: "Get rid of that nasty spot on my chin!" or "Please remove those lines under my eyes!" And I do it dutifully. But there is no blood. There is no knife. Plastic surgeons are the ultimate Photoshoppers, because they work on live models. Maybe we should change some of the tools in the Photoshop toolbox. Maybe we could have a scalpel, some gauze, a stapler... Here's a good digital surgeon.

APOLLO 11 REMEMBERED NASA PHOTO GALLERY
NASA has posted hundreds of digitized photographs from Apollo 11, the first manned mission to land on the moon. Page 2 of the Apollo 11 section now includes that mission's film magazine "S" in its entirety, representing all photographs taken during the historic first moonwalk on July 20, 1969. Images identified with the prefix AS11-40 are now seen for the first time in their clearest and most accurate presentation to date, and are a result of recent work by Johnson Space Center to digitally scan original Apollo film. The process involves removing each original film roll from a double-freezer, allowing it to thaw, then digitally scanning each frame using an Oxberry adapted HR-500 long roll film scanner. The Apollo magazine "S" raw digital scans were supplied on DVD-R to the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal and Project Apollo Archive, for which Kipp Teague processed the images for web presentation.

Midnight Visits To Photoblogs.org
Photoblogs.org is a resource site to help people find photoblogs. Their database currently holds listings for over 5,000 photoblogs in over 60 countries. Jumping from one to another, I was awed and spellbound. Look for "The Photoblogs.org Top 10" right on the front page, not far from top. Truly inspirational.
Photoshop Tip - Opening Layer Files Without All the Layers
![]()
If you have a large multi-layered file, you know it can take a while to open, and that's fine - it's part of working with large files. But sometimes you're not actually going to work on the file, and you just want to open it, take a quick look at it, and then close it (maybe you just want to see if it's the version you are looking for). So why waste time looking for a huge multi-layered file if you just want to take a quick look? Well you don't have to - just go under the file menu, choose open, and navigate to the layered file, but before you click the open button, hold Shift-Option (PC: Shift-Alt). By holding these two keys down before you choose open, it opens a flattened version of your layered file.

Mike Morper offers a PS action for photographers interested in panoramic (QTVR) images. The action preps all of the source files for chromatic abberation and exposure drop-off (fisheye lenses have a nasty problem with that). SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly
There often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.
Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.
Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.
Generate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.
Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
