In Praise Of Zippy The Chimpanzee
October 28, 2004
Adobe Photoshop BlogFrom CreativePro: "It's hard not to chuckle at the sight of costumed animals placed in human situations. Long before Photoshop, photographers wrangled kittens, puppies, and bunnies into decidedly undignified positions. With Halloween around the corner, Gene Gable takes a look at the sacrifices our pets make for the sake of comedy."

Photoshop Tip — Resizing Paths The Easy Way
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipWhen you're using the Pen tool, you can visually resize your path by using the Path Selection tool. To do this, go up in the Options Bar and turn on the checkbox for Show Bounding Box. This puts a Free Transform-like bounding box around your path, and you can use this bounding box to resize your path by dragging the handles (remember to hold the Shift key to resize it proportionately).

The "Instant Photographer" Syndrome
From CreativePro: "Digital cameras have tossed many novices into the deep end of the photographic pool, with the result that learning how to shoot good pictures has been a sink-or-swim affair. Few have grounded their digital knowledge in traditional film basics, like lens length and light metering. It's time to catch up." This is yet another good article on digital photography from Ben Long.

Akvis Releases Mac Version Of Chameleon
October 22, 2004
Akvis have released the Mac version of their Chameleon plug-in. Chameleon is very easy to handle as it does not require the precise selection of objects. You copy an object, insert it into another picture, press a button and the object adjusts to the new background as chameleons do - adapting to the new color range and blending with the environment.
You can download the fully functional trial version and evaluate it 10 days free of charge.
Photoshop Tip — Shapes Without The Shape Layer
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop Tip If you use Photoshop's shape tools, by default they create a shape layer (which is basically a layer filled with your foreground color, with a clipping path in the shape of your shape, if that makes any sense). We've had loads of e-mails from users asking us, "Do I have to have that funky shape layer? Can't I just have the shape without the layer and the clipping path?" Absolutely! When you choose one of the shape tools, look up in the options bar and on the far left you'll see three small icons. Click on the third icon from the left and you'll get the shape - no shape layer, no paths, no kidding.

A Citizen's Guide To Wal-Mart's Reaction
October 20, 2004 [permanent link]
Adobe Photoshop BlogVia lost remote: "Today's Jon Stewart controversy: Wal-Mart cancels its order for his book because of a page showing Photoshopped pix of naked Supreme Court justices."
According to the USA TODAY article: "Warner Books publisher Jamie Raab says Wal-Mart canceled its order after seeing the photos because the book "didn't meet their criteria" on potentially offensive material. Wal-Mart spokeswoman Karen Burk says: "We felt a majority of our customers would not be comfortable with the image" of the naked justices."
The book, America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction, is No. 1 on USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list for the second week.
Rumors on the street are that if this kind of crass Photoshop manipulation continues, Adobe will have no choice but to add "Photo Retouch Restrictions" in the next version of Photoshop, with code that would block the opening of photos bearing any resemblance to the Chief Justices.
Photoshop How-To: Making Painted-Paper Illustrations
Via CreativePro: "Like the look of collages crafted out of paper pieces but prefer digital tools to manual scissors and glue? See how to make your own paper collages in Adobe Photoshop. In this excerpt from "Adobe Photoshop CS Creative Studio," Luanne Seymour Cohen shows you how to create collages out of digital rather than pulped paper."

Photoshop Tip — The Hidden Measurement Pop-Down Menu
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipYou probably already know the trick about entering values in measurement fields in the Options bar. You can change your unit of measure by typing in the appropriate abbreviation after the value (for example, if you want 100 pixels, you'd type in "100px"). But there's an even easier way (and you don't have to memorize a bunch of abbreviations). Just type in your number, Control-click (PC: Right-click) in the field and a pop-up list of measurement units will appear. Just choose the one you want and it'll take care of the rest.

Dave Cross’s Top Ten New Photoshop Elements Features
From the article: "Compiling your top 10 favorites of anything is difficult, especially when there are many possibilities to choose from. That’s certainly the case with Photoshop Elements 3 — trying to narrow it down to my top 10 new (or improved) features was really a challenge. But, top 10 it is, so here goes…"
After reading through the list, I realized (as Dave Cross notes) that many top Photoshop CS features have now become a part of Elements 3. PSE 3 now includes Camera RAW Support, a Shadows/Highlights tool, a Healing Brush tool, and Photo Filter Adjustment Layers. Makes me wonder what new features the next version of Photoshop will include.

Photoshop Tip — Two Easy Ways To Create Transparency
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipThe most common method for making a background transparent back in Photoshop 6.0 is still available to you in Photoshop CS, and that's to go to the Layers palette and simply delete the background layer. That's it. This leaves only the layers that were above the background layer (which already have background transparency). Now, there's another easy way, and that's to go to Photoshop's Save for Web command, switch to the eyedropper tool in the Save for Web's Toolbox, and click on the background color you want to be transparent. Then, just below the Color table on the bottom right of the dialog, click on the first icon, which creates transparency from your selected color.

Photoshop Tip — Moving Your Image In Full Screen Mode
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIn Photoshop CS you can pull off something users have been wanting for years - the ability to change the placement of your entire image once you're in Full Screen Mode (where your image is centered on screen, surrounded by a black border with no menus, palettes, or tools visible). Just enter Full Screen Mode (press f, f, then Tab), hold the Spacebar, and your cursor will change into the Hand tool. Click and drag your entire image anywhere on the screen you'd like. To return to regular mode, press f then Tab.

Photoshop Tip — Zooming All Your Tiled Images at Once
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIf you've chosen to tile your open your windows (in the Windows menu, under Arrange, choose Tile), in Photoshop CS you get some hidden functionality. If you want all the tile images displayed at the same level of magnification, just hold the shift key, grab the zoom tool, zoom in on one of the images, and all the other tiled images will jump to that same magnification. This is great when you're trying to compare a number of similar images for detail.

We've added him to our Inspiration Section, where you can see some close-ups of his work.
Photoshop Tip — The Advantage of Photo Filter Adjustment Layers
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipOne of the most brilliant things Adobe did when they added Photo Filters to Photoshop CS (these filters replicate the old traditional screw-on lens filters) was to make them Adjustment Layers. By doing this, after you apply the Photo Filter (let's say, for example, you used the 81 filter to warm a cool photo), you can get the Brush tool, set your Foreground color to black, and paint over any areas of the photo you don't want to be warmed. This gives you a level of flexibility you wouldn't get any other way.

To jump to the top layer of the stack, press Shift-Option-Right Bracket (])(PC: Shift-Alt-Right Bracket). To move your current layer down one layer at a time, press Command-Left Bracket (PC: Control-Left Bracket). To move it up one layer at a time, press Command-Right Bracket (PC: Control-Right Bracket). Because of the overwhelming demand for free Photoshop plugins, we've created a Photoshop Plugins Page with lots of information and links. The page will also feature the latest plugins news, and the latest free Photoshop plugins.
Photoshop Tip — Select Everything On Your Layer In One Click
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIf you have a layer that contains many objects, you can put a selection around every object on that layer by holding the Command key (PC: Control key) and clicking on that layer's name in the layers palette. This is ideal in situations where you have an object that is heavily feathered or has a flattened drop shadow. If you use this trick, it will look like it only selects the most opaque portion of the image, but when you move it, you'll find it has selected every pixel on the layer, including the soft-edged pixels - it won't leave anything behind.

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

Media Lab Release SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.

SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProGenerate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.

Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
