It can render smooth artistic pencil sketches, pen and ink illustrations, and a number of different halftone/threshold effects.
Photoshop Tip - Add Color to Your Shadows
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipAdding a color to a shadow is a quick way to give any layout a nice design twist. Matching the shadow to a surrounding color or other graphic element is a great way to tie the layout together. Click on the Adda a Layer Style icon (the black circle with the "f" in it) and choose Drop Shadow. Click on the color swatch and select a color from your image by moving your cursor over the image (your cursor will turn into an eyedropper) and clicking on the color. You can edit the shadow settings to acheive the desired results. If you want to put another artsy twist on it (and we do) make a custom shadow with the gradient tool and use free transform to add some perspective.

Photoshop Tip - Don't Make it Black - Make it Mega Black
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIf you are making a black background for something that will appear in print, don't just fill the background with 100% black. For that rich looking, deep black, you need to have a custom black build (we call it mega black) for that "midnight black" effect when printed. Our favorite black build is C=75, M=50, Y=50, and K=100. Most Traditional print houses use what they call a cyan kicker in their blacks, which is a black build using 75% cyan and 100% black, but we feel our mega black build is much, well, blacker!

CreativeBits Reveals Free Amazing Illustration Tool
[July 25, 2004]
The CreativeBits blog by Ivan Raszl is really full of great information and the layout is very nice. Recently they discovered a powerful free application that I think graphic designers will want to have a look at. The following is from their site:
Adobe Photoshop Blog - CreativeBits Reveals Free Amazing Illustration Tool"Expression is an amazing free illustration tool. You can simulate water color, chalk drawings or any other illustration tool realistically in no time. Most importantly all you illustrations will be vector based, which means you freely scale them to any size you want. Also, you can export them from Expression to PS in layers for further manipulation.
"Normally you would need a Passport to download this beauty, but here is a link to download it directly with no questions asked: Expression 57MB."
Visit the CreativeBits blog entry to get the link.

Yahoo Launches Photo Upload For Camera Phones
[July 23, 2004]
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) — Seeking to tap the explosive growth in cell phones with cameras, Yahoo Thursday launched a service that will let users transmit pictures from their camera phones directly to their Yahoo Photos accounts.
The company said Yahoo Mobile Photos Upload will work with any camera phone on the five major U.S. wireless carriers. There is no charge for the service, Yahoo said, and no limit to the number of photos that can be uploaded.
The new upload service follows an application Yahoo already offers for customers of some cell phone carriers that lets users view the pictures in their photo accounts on their phones.

Photoshop Tip - Let Photoshop Straighten Your Crooked Scans
[July 19, 2004]
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipThat's right - straightening is totally automated in Photoshop CS. In fact, you can simply toss two or three photos on your scanner bed, without taking the time to carefully align them, and scan them all with just one pass of your scanner. Then, open the single scan of the three photos in Photoshop, go under the file menu, under automate and choose crop and straighten photos. Photoshop will then crop, straighten, and even put each photo into its own separate document. Nice.

Photoshop Tip - How To Unerase
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipYou probably already know that you can use the history brush as an "undo" on a brush, and that by default the history brush paints back to how your image looked when you first opened it. But did you know that the eraser tool has a similar function? That's right; the next time you've got the eraser tool chosen, look up in the options bar and you'll see a checkbox for erase to history. Normally, the eraser tool erases to your background color, but when you turn on this checkbox, it erases back to what the image looked like when you opened it.

Photoshop Tip - Sharpening An Image
[July 13, 2004]
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipWhen you reduce an image’s size or import it from a digital camera, it usually needs some sharpening — the amount depends on the output method for the image. Several books recommend changing the image into Lab mode and only sharpening the Luminosity channel, but here’s an easier way to do the same thing: Choose Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask, apply the settings that you want, then choose Edit>Fade Unsharp Mask, and alter the Blend Mode to Luminosity. As an added benefit, you can also reduce the amount of the sharpening at the same time if you feel that you’ve applied too much.

[July 10, 2004]
From the ESA website: For many years astronomical images from the world’s telescopes were reserved for an elite of astronomers and technical people. Now anyone with a desktop computer running Adobe Photoshop software can try their hand at crafting astronomical images as beautiful as those from the Hubble Space Telescope. The ESA/ESO/NASA Photoshop FITS Liberator works on Windows PCs and Macs (OS X 10.2+) and is optimised for Photoshop CS, but also works in Photoshop 7.0.

Michael Moore & Bush Holding Hands On The White House Lawn?
[July 08, 2004]
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Michael Moore and President George Bush walking hand-in-handSometimes it is hard to tell if a photo is real or if it has been Photoshopped, but this one is pretty obvious. Take a look at the front page of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 website to see a shot of Michael Moore and President George Bush walking hand-in-hand across the White House lawn.
By the way, according to Adobe, Trademarks are not verbs. CORRECT: The image was enhanced using Adobe® Photoshop® software. INCORRECT: The image was photoshopped.
But in this case was the original image in fact "enhanced"? Wouldn't that depend who's side you were on? Wouldn't that be a political question? In my defense, although I did use the incorrect "Photoshopped" I made sure to use a capital "P".

A Collection Of Interesting Sites
[July 04, 2004]
Here are some interesting Photoshop sites I've recently discovered:
Worth 1000 is a creative competition and photoshop contest site, with over 2,300 galleries. You can have a real missing time experience getting lost in all of this. For starters, try Martha's New Digs.
Is It Fake Or Foto? has 10 images to look at. Some of them are photographs of real objects or scenes, others are created by computer graphics (CG) artists. Test your ability to tell which among the array of images are real, and which are CG.
The Mirror Project is a growing community of like-minded individuals who have photographed themselves in all manner of reflective surfaces. Mesmerizing.
Photoshop Tech Vault 2.0 has links to various Photoshop and prepress related articles and websites. It is recommended that you explore the other pages at the sites linked - as these links are specific and many of the sites have excellent information on other topics that may be of interest.
PeeledEyePrintbox is a site for photographers and artists to sell fine art prints of their work online in their own gallery without paying any commission. It's also easy to use, so photographers can get up and running quickly with no prior knowledge of web design.
ShutterPoint is a diverse collection of digital Royalty Free images available for sale, provided by photography enthusiasts and professional photographers. Allows photographers to store, share, promote and sell their photos, features a real-time photo rating system and subscription-based storage of digital photographs.

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

Media Lab Release SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.

SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProGenerate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.

Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
