Photoshop Tips, Tricks & Tutorials - Jennifer Apple - I Cover The Waterfront - Special Batgirl Edition
December 29, 2007

Photoshop Tips, Tricks & Tutorials - Jennifer Apple - I Cover The Waterfront - Special Batgirl EditionOne more collection of links before it's 2008 - which will mean Photoshop CS4 no doubt. That's the thing with Photoshop, there's always a new version, a new plugin, a new action, a new book, a new tutorial to look forward to. Happy 2008!

John Nack
Adobe ate me baby!!
Ding ding ding! We have a winner.
Every year around this time, the online community latches onto some story (CS3 icons last year; "Microsoft to buy Macromedia" before that; etc.) and goes nuts with speculation. The speculation is all the more thrilling given that the affected companies are only lightly staffed right now, making it hard to provide a meaningful response.
This year it's "Lies, Lies, and Adobe Spies"--a story noting that some Adobe apps contact a Web address associated with Web analytics company Omniture.

What's Russian for "Photoshopping"?
Ah, Russia--home to 50-rouble copies of your favorite Adobe apps. Photoshop team member Heather Dolan recently returned from a service trip there & reports that pirated software remains ridiculously easy to obtain. When a street merchant learned that she was from Adobe, his response was to double his asking price for the Creative Suite! (You've kind of got to admire the chutzpah...)

Imagining Insider
Photoshop Tips, Tricks & Tutorials - Jennifer Apple - I Cover The Waterfront - Special Batgirl EditionMacro Photography, Microscopic Details
When Riva Berkovitz moved close to Griggs Park in Brookline, Mass., its beauty inspired her to take up photography. “I needed to capture it but I realized I couldn’t paint it,” Ms. Berkovitz said. “So I decided to buy a digital camera.” Ms. Berkovitz assumed she would use the camera for landscapes. But she ended up concentrating on the minute rather than the sweeping: close-ups of the fine details of flowers.

Leica Photo Contest Announced
Leica Camera AG, Solms is now inviting entries for its next international “Leica Oskar Barnack Award“ (deadline January 31, 2008) and “Leica European Publishers Award for Photography” (deadline March 21, 2008) competitions for professional photographers.

The image is from a beta site by the name of Edushi, which has created a complete pixel-art representation of Hong Kong. Navigation elements are similar to those in Google Maps — zooming, panning and what appears to be a search box with a few options. Unfortunately our Chinese is a bit rusty (read: non-existent) so beyond that, we don't know much about this site other than the obvious fact that it's a visually stunning representation of Hong Kong.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Studio Techniques
December 27, 2007

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Studio TechniquesThe Photoshop CS3 version of one of the most respected Photoshop books has been released. The book is by Ben Willmore and it is called Adobe Photoshop CS3 Studio Techniques. Here's some press material about it:

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Studio Techniques has been completely updated to cover the new features in CS3. In a friendly, easy-going style that's long on information and short on techno-babble, Photoshop Hall-of-Famer Ben Willmore guides you through the concepts, and features that will truly make a difference in how you use Photoshop every day.

He takes you from blindly following step-by-step instructions to an in-depth understanding of how Photoshop works, cutting through the fat to focus on what he considers to be Photoshop's essential features. This full-color book delivers the content in three easily digestible sections: Working Foundations, Production Essentials, and Creative Explorations, and includes a companion CD with bonus chapters and practice images so you can quickly and easily apply the techniques covered throughout.

Beginning with the working foundations of Photoshop — the basic tools, palettes, layers, and masks, you'll quickly move on to real-world production techniques, such as how to sharpen scans, correct and optimize images, and use the powerful Curves and Channels features to your advantage.

Finally, you'll get to fully explore Photoshop's creative potential by blending and enhancing images, creating collages, retouching photographs, colorizing, and working with filters and layer masks. By the time you finish Adobe Photoshop CS3 Studio Techniques, your creativity and efficiency levels should soar and you'll start to feel like you finally "get" Photoshop.

About Ben Willmore
Ben WillmoreA senior engineer from NASA once said that this man gave the best technical seminar he ever attended. That same year a computer-phobic who had been struggling with Photoshop for years proclaimed that “He takes the Boogie Man out of Photoshop!” This seems to be Ben Willmore's special gift; he has an uncanny ability to connect with users of every level and mindset; whether it's first-timers taking their first sniff of Photoshop, or razor-sharp nerds and nerdettes who are on the fast track to technical illumination. The common echo that Ben leaves in his wake seems to be “Aha! I finally GET Photoshop!”

To date, Ben has personally taught over 45,000 Photoshop users on three continents. His descriptions of Curves and Channels are thought to be the best in the industry and his breakthrough teaching style of “not-just-how-but-why,” has made him the in-house instructor of choice for companies such as Mercedes Benz, Adobe Systems, America Online, the U.S. Airforce, Lexis Nexis and Fisher-Price Toys. His award-winning, best-selling book, Adobe Photoshop Studio Techniques is said to be “Arguably, one of the best Photoshop books ever written.” by Photoshop User's publisher, Jim Workman.

You can find Adobe Photoshop CS3 Studio Techniques at Amazon.com at a discount price.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Who Needs It?
December 19, 2007

If you have managed to live without Photoshop Lightroom up until now, what makes it so fantabulous/damned hot that you need to place it at the top of your software wish list? Read Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Who Needs It? by Mark Galer for some thoughts on Lightroom's top features. From the intro:

Photoshop Lightroom has had somewhat of an identity crisis amongst the general population of photographers since its release in early 2007. The Adobe engineers built it to fill a gap in the Photoshop family of products (Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements being the other two family members) but many amongst the photographic community have not been able to identify its primary task to make it the ‘must have’ product that Adobe hoped it would become for all digital photographers.

Diane Varner Of Daily Walks Photo Blog - Interview
December 15, 2007

Diane Varner posts photos to her blog Daily Walks about once a week and I always look forward to seeing her latest work. Her hyper-real photography is stunning and makes me meditate on each image longer than most photography does. It is this mesmerizing nature of her work that I find so deeply appealing. There is such a satisfying moment of balance and beauty that the details, colors and textures of her art reveal and celebrate.

"My hopes," Diane told us, "are such that these images will 'take you away' for a brief moment... and in that moment, you’ll catch a glimpse of the magic that I experience on my daily walks." Here is a short interview, which features some of her work, but make sure to visit Diane's site to view larger versions of her beautiful work.

December 05, 2007

We've got a new Elements 6 tutorial, Contrast Tutorial - Working With Adjustment Layers In Elements 6. This tutorial is an extract from Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 Maximum Performance by Mark Galer. Here's the intro...

Working With Adjustment Layers
One of the most important image adjustment features in a professional photographer’s workflow is Curves (a sort of Levels command on steroids). Color Curves has now made a welcome appearance in the Enhance menu in Photoshop Elements but it is still not available as an adjustment layer. This project shows you several ways to control contrast using adjustment layers to increase your post-production editing power to maximum performance.

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

Media Lab Release SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.

SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProGenerate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.

Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
