High Dynamic Range Training Video From Gavin Phillips

Gavin Phillips has released a new series of training that walks you through working with High Dynamic Range. Here's a short interview that explains his new product.
What is High Dynamic Range Imaging?
You take 3, 5 or 7 photographs of the same scene at different exposure levels, usually 1-2 stop increments. You now have photographs that are overexposed, underexposed and regularly exposed.
Software then combines those images and blends them into one image that has well exposed shadows and no blown out highlights. There is also a clarity & vivid ‘look’ with HDR images that you cannot get with regular RAW images.
How do you set-up the camera to photograph HDR?
Generally you will want to put your DSLR camera into auto bracketing mode. You can then set how many images it fires off and at what exposure increments each photo will be taken at. It is best to put your camera on Aperture Priority or Manual Mode so the depth of view (F-stop) stays fixed throughout the sequence of photographs. You should use a tripod, because you don’t want movement between shots. Although you can shoot HDR handheld, but you should at least have something solid to lean against. A shutter release cable or remote release is the optimal set-up, but not absolutely necessary.
After you have your sets of photographs shot at different exposures, what’s next?
You use Photoshop or HDR specific software to merge your sets of images into a single 32-bit HDR image. The 32-bit image does not look good because your monitor cannot display it correctly. You must move onto tone mapping your image to bring out the colors and alter the contrast and lighting.
Which HDR specific software do you use?
I use ‘Photomatix Pro’ & ‘Dynamic Photo HDR.’ I think ‘Photomatix’ is the better of the two, but ‘Dynamic Photo HDR’ has different options available and is very inexpensive. There are several others, including ‘FDR Tools’ & ‘Artizen HDR.’
Is HDR any good for portraits?
You can photograph people using HDR, but they must be perfectly still for 1-second. This means taking 2-3 sets of HDR when you get a good pose, just in case they blink in one of the photographs. Very small movement can be removed with the ghost removal part of the software.
