Slow Dancing - Making 5 Seconds Last 10 Minutes

Wired just published a story about photographer David Michalek's project called Slow Dancing, which is a series of super-slow-motion, hi-defintion films featuring 43 portraits of dancers and choreographers from around the world, displayed on multiple screens, each 5 stories high. And what's astonishing is that the films, which last an average of 8 to 10 minutes each, contain only 5 seconds of action. That's because they were shot at 1,000 frames a second. Wow. And I was so intrigued, but the photos in the article left me guessing. There weren't any. There was just a drawing. How bizarre.
Well of course I went to Google, and the next thing I knew I had discovered countless articles and web pages about the project. So here are some highlights of sites I visited, and some great demo movies and some stills from David's truly mesmerizing work.
At Apple you can find a nice story on David and Slow Dancing at their Pro Profiles site. They feature a short piece of film from the project that shows American Ballet Theater principal dancer Herman Cornejo executing a seemingly impossible double tours en l’air.
At the Slow Dancing website you can find lots and lots of info and stills, and also another sample film clip (a low-resolution sample from the original uncompressed HD footage). The demonstration video represents the final 2:46 of Herman Cornejo's 10-minute performance. There's also a page that lists all of the dancers in the films, including stills and short bios. The media page has links to articles on the project, and what's even better is that they also offer PDF versions, so there are no missing page messages or registration nightmares here.
If you want to learn more about the technology behind this, visit the Vision Research site, where you'll find an article detailing how the Vision Research Phantom HD camera was used in the project. Here are some stats: "For the project, Michalek recorded each dancer for five seconds, while they performed their own unique forms of dance; however, because they were shot at 1,000 frames per second using the Phantom HD high-speed camera, Michalek was able to essentially turn the five-second routines into performances lasting many minutes. For each five-second routine, the Phantom HD recorded an astounding 20 gigabytes of data."
David will be publishing a book of stills from Slow Dancing in the coming months and we will feature an interview with him as well as sample stills as the book nears completion.
Meanwhile, here's a quote from David's Apple profile: "On a deeper level, I wanted to create a mode of viewing that’s akin to meditation, where the art slows you down and brings on an intensified sense of focus. Much of what I’m ultimately interested in is the sacred function of art: art that doesn’t merely beautify, but beatifies, or makes blessed."
