Photoshop Tips, Tricks & Tutorials - Jennifer Apple - I Cover The Waterfront - Special Batgirl Edition
July 20, 2007

Photoshop Tips, Tricks & Tutorials - Jennifer Apple - I Cover The Waterfront - Special Batgirl EditionFind tips on how to speed up your copy of Photoshop, download some free Photoshop brushes from Stephanie, see Bert Monroy razzle and dazzle and vanish, read Scott Kelby's report on a super fast card reader, and get lost in John Nack's latest discoveries, particularly those Ben Willmore HDR gems. It's a good day to go Photoshopping.

Supercharge Photoshop
Many dedicated Photoshop users can get substantial speed gains from their existing equipment by simply optimizing their computer and software so that it runs Photoshop more efficiently. Here is a quick collection of speed-enhancing tips for getting the most efficient usage out of your software and computer...

This Super Fast Card Reader Is Hot!
I’ve been using a Firewire card reader to get my images from my memory card into my laptop for quite a while now, but I forgot to bring it with me to one of my Lightroom Tour stops and wound up borrowing a friend’s Delkin Compact Flash reader that slides directly into your laptop’s Express Card slot (so there’s no Firewire or USB cord necessary).
But beside the sheer convenience of not having to carry a reader and a connector cable, in copying the photos off my card — it absolutely hauled butt! (and “butt” isn’t the term I think best describes it). In fact, I’ve never had images copied at anywhere near that speed (up to 20MB per seconds!).

Photography from the Four Corners
Going way out west, West, Ben Willmore has been doing some creative HDR work: I particularly like this Kingman, AZ motel; Needles to Calico; Grill; and Regulator.

Great Star Wars-related art
Something about the Star Wars franchise continues to inspire all kinds of creativity... Ryan Church has created amazing concept art for Star Wars Episodes II & III. Corel profiles Ryan on their Painter site, and on his site he discusses some details of how he uses Painter and Photoshop together.

My Favorite (simple) LR Keyboard Commands (Mikkel Aaland)
I’m visually oriented. Give me a well-designed UI and I’m happy. I have a limited memory for keyboard shortcuts. One keystroke is ok. Two is pushing it. Three or more… forget it. I especially like keyboard commands that follow some logic. Like “T” for toolbar. Maybe I’m getting old, but my brain is filling up and it takes a while for keyboard commands to stick. After using Lightroom for quite some time now, here are a few keyboard commands that have finally stuck...

Photoshop vs. Lightroom (Michael Clark)
Several days ago I spent an afternoon talking about digital workflow with a few fellow professional photographers here in Santa Fe: Nevada Wier and Jamey Stillings. Both are incredible, world-class photographers. During the course of our workflow discussion I started to think about the Photoshop & Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) versus Lightroom question. I thought I’d blog about a Photoshop/ACR workflow versus a Lightroom workflow. Both are valid workflows. What it comes down to is what makes more sense for the type of shooting that you do. Below are some pros and cons for both workflows (and I am sure I have missed lots of pros and cons - feel free to let me know any I’ve missed)...

I normally don’t write posts for a single font, but when I laid eyes on this treasure of a typeface I just couldn’t help myself. I wanted to share it with everyone right away. Have a look for yourself. Everyone has their opinions, but for those of you that can find a use for this terrifically themed and textured typeface, I think you will like what you see.

Episode 51: The Reference Generator
In this week's episode we take a look at how to solve that pesky little problem of never knowing the right keyboard shortcut when it matters most! Hidden inside the Photoshop UI is a great feature that allows you to create your own stylized keyboard shortcut reference chart to display as you see fit!

A Photoshop brush set made up of 28 various paste marks. Most are smudges made with my finger, others are just globs of paste. Many of the brushes in this set would work great as finger painting smudges, too, btw! These are all pretty large, averaging around 800 x 800 pixels. These were fun to make!

Put a large panoramic image on the web with Photoshop CS3
Photoshop CS3 now includes the Zoomify plug-in. With this plug-in you can take your large images and put them up on the web without your clients having to wait for the large files to download. This technology generates a Flash based animation that allows your visitors to zoom in and pan around your images. In this episode we'll start from scratch creating a panoramic image and then use the Export for Zoomify command to put it on the web.

As always, a special Batgirl thank you to James Jean

Plugins for Photoshop allow you to either do something that you cannot do with the features included in Photoshop or they allow you to do something easier, faster or better than you could do in Photoshop without the plug-in. Did You Know You Could Create An Entire Website In Photoshop?
SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

Media Lab Release SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.

SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProGenerate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.

Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
