Photoshop Site GFX Gets A New Home - Trevor Morris Interview
June 28 2007
Trevor Morris of GFX fame has launched a new website that will replace his Photoshop news, tutorials and resources site, and so we tracked him down and asked for details. Here's the scoop on his new venture...
Why have you chosen to change sites?
For years now, I've had a <cough> dial-up connection, and part of the package included some Web space. So several years ago, I created the foundation for my (now) old site, GFX (user.fundy.net/morris/). The name was a play on "Graphics by Trevor Morris", but I've never really liked it I just couldn't think of a better name at the time.
GFX started out as a simple resume/portfolio site. Then I gradually started adding Photoshop tutorials, articles and other downloadable goodies, and the site just kept growing from there. I guess it fared well in spite of its organic growth, but I've always longed for the free time to rebuild it to better support what it had become.
Then there's my recently discovered passion for photography... I wasn't too eager to slap yet another side door onto the aging infrastructure, so I became a member of the GFXArtist.com (a great community with lots of very talented and inspiring people) and posted some of my photos there, for comments and constructive feedback.
Anyway, a few months ago, I decided to try my hand at freelancing, which necessitated getting a hi-speed connection; however, since my connection was from another ISP, it meant losing my current Web space. "No big deal," I thought. I'd been meaning to rebuild the site for years anyway, so this was my opportunity to start fresh and get a "real" domain.
I wanted the new site to serve as a portfolio for potential clients, while combining my interest in design and photography, and still allow me to share my knowledge with the Photoshop community (which I really enjoy doing). And thus, Trevor Morris Photographics was born. I chose "photographics" because I thought it summed up nicely what the site was about photography and graphics.
What's the focus of the new site?
As I said earlier, I really have two main focuses for the new site: 1) to serve as a portfolio of my work and experience (primarily graphic design, photography, and scripting) for potential employers; and 2) to share articles, tutorials, scripts, shortcuts, tip and tricks, etc., just like my old site, GFX, always did.
Like so many designers, Photoshop is more than just a tool to me I find it fun and rewarding to use. Over the years, I've accumulated a lot of knowledge about this amazing piece of software some from other users, and some from my own experiences so I guess this is just my way of giving back to the community.
What will happen to old site (and the content)?
Eventually, the old site will go the way of the Dodo bird. As time permits (around freelance work, family, and life in general), I'll port the relevant content, and update it if necessary (as I did with the new Actions article/tutorial).
As I migrate the content, I'll probably start pulling down the old articles and redirecting to the new site. I want to "wean" visitors off the old site, as I'll no longer be maintaining, nor updating it, and within a month or two, I expect to remove it entirely.
So what's next?
Well, in addition to porting content, I also have a lot of accumulated content (tips, tricks, unfinished articles, etc.) that I'd love to have time to finish and post. I'd also like to post some articles about photography, and... too many ideas, not enough hours in a day!
Also, since the site is only a month old, and technically still in "beta", expect many changes, improvements, and new features over the next couple of months. As I'm building the site, I'm keeping a log of things I'd like to do, and some day I'd love to find the time to get it all done.
Thanks Trevor, and good luck with the move!
So travel on over to Trevor's new site and bookmark it. He has a very focused writing style, which I find very effective for learning. And look through his photos. Some are very beautiful (like the bridge that we've posted from his winter collection). Now about that Photoshop Actions tutorial...
Trevor has written an extensive tutorial Using Actions To Automate Tasks In Photoshop. This will get you up and running in no time. Simple, direct instructions walk you through the entire process. From the intro:
While Adobe Photoshop has a host of automation tools, one of the most versatile and powerful of them is called an action. In fact, some of the other automation commands, such as batches and droplets, derive their functionality from actions.
An action is like a macro or script; however, while scripts have a reputation for being confusing and difficult, actions are very easy to create. If you know how to use Photoshop, you know most of what you need to create your own actions.
For example, let's say that you have 100 digital photos that you'd like to post on the Internet. Normally, you'd have to load each one, scale, color correct, sharpen, and then save them one at a time. Alternatively, you could create an action that does all the "dirty work" for you and best of all, you'll get consistent results in far less time than you could've achieved by doing it manually!
To better understand actions, let's begin with a comprehensive overview of the Actions panel, including the commands available in the Actions panel menu. We'll then use these commands to create a couple of actions of our very own!
Visit Trevor Morris Photographics, there's lots to explore and some great free resources, including the latest CS3 Keyboard Shortcuts ready to download as PDFs. And if you have some karma issues to resolve, consider visiting Tevor's donation page. You can send him a little something though Paypal, or select an item from his Amazon.com Wishlist. We did, and it felt good!

Special Offer - Fluid Mask - Photoshop Masking Plugin
Fluid Mask is based on breakthrough segmentation technology inspired by the way the eye, optic nerve and brain perform visual processing. When an image is loaded, Fluid Mask's segmentation engine analyses the distribution of colors, finding the natural groups within the image. Together with information calculated about edges, gradients and textures, a model is constructed which divides the images into objects.

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly
There often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.
Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.
Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.
Generate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.
Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
