Diane Varner Of Daily Walks Photo Blog - Interview
December 15, 2007

Diane Varner posts photos to her blog Daily Walks about once a week and I always look forward to seeing her latest work. Her hyper-real photography is stunning and makes me meditate on each image longer than most photography does. It is this mesmerizing nature of her work that I find so deeply appealing. There is such a satisfying moment of balance and beauty that the details, colors and textures of her art reveal and celebrate.

"My hopes," Diane told us, "are such that these images will 'take you away' for a brief moment... and in that moment, you’ll catch a glimpse of the magic that I experience on my daily walks." Here is a short interview, which features some of her work, but make sure to visit Diane's site to view larger versions of her beautiful work.

Diane Varner Of Daily Walks Photo Blog - Interview

How did you get into photography?

Quite honestly, I stumbled upon it. My dog, Boomer, was no longer able to jog with me so we started hiking the local California coastline and mountains trails. In the slower rhythm of our daily walks, I found myself noticing the nuances of light and detail and picked up my camera. Moved by the universal aspect of these images, I have felt compelled to add words that convey this.

What inspired you to start the site?

I had discovered Photoblogs.org and was amazed at the community that existed there. Having been a fine artist and freelance graphic designer for most of my life, I had worked almost entirely in isolation. The idea that one could put their work out there and have fellow photographers and others comment from all over the world was an opportunity that I knew I had to partake in. I’ve not been disappointed!

How long has it been online now?

I uploaded the first few images in March 2005.

Is it gaining in popularity?

I am happy to say “yes!” although I am finding that it is virtually impossible to reciprocate the visits to my fellow photobloggers’ sites as much as I’d like. All in all, I am extremely grateful for the support I receive from my viewers.

Diane Varner Of Daily Walks Photo Blog - Interview

Do you have any plans to expand it?

I am currently working on another web site that will be an extension of my blog. This site will feature my work that will be for sale via prints, note cards, journals and books. I also look forward to creating online slideshows accompanied by music; these will be featured on my blog.

What is your posting schedule?

I try to post a new image at least once a week, give or take a day. When time allows, I post two times a week.

How many photos have you posted to the site now? What are some of your personal favorites?

I currently have 460+ images on my blog. It’s hard to pinpoint favorites as each of them hold memories but, here are a few:
My Treasured Pal
My Heart Soared
Tryin to Lick It
CompletelyImmersed
All is Light
Within, You’ll Find Me

Will you create screenshots or movies for the workflow you've posted?

I hope to eventually create screenshots. My workflow has changed (slightly) with the latest version of Photoshop CS3 so I would like to add these; screenshots will be the easiest way to demonstrate them.

Diane Varner Of Daily Walks Photo Blog - Interview

Are you still planning on selling note cards and prints of your images in the near future? Any book deals? Future projects?

As mentioned earlier, I will be selling my work through a new website-business that I am currently working on called Leaftracks Press. In the last few years, I have been creating handmade books and look forward to making limited editions that will feature my photographs and words.

Everyone has their all-time favorite Photoshop tip or trick they like to use all the time. What is yours?

My main “trick” that I use in Photoshop is dodging and burning using a layer of 50% gray in overlay mode. Through this, I am able to bring out exquisite detail via the lights and darks. I learned this trick from the master, Russell Brown. He has an online tutorial of this technique.

Thanks Diane, and continued success!

Visit Diane's site to view more photos. You can also read all about her camera gear and post-processing software, and there's some Photoshop post-processing tips available as well.

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

Media Lab Release SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.

SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProGenerate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.

Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
